This Post was organized at Jackson, four years ago. Francis Smith, in whose honor it was named, was one of those who were not ashamed, before the war, to be called "an Abolitionist." This man, "Old Frank Smith," lived in Middleton, this county, and moved into Jackson shortly before the war began. He talked a great deal about slavery, and predicted its downfall. He foresaw the terrible war, and in that war he wanted to fight, and die if necessary. He then (in 1861) over sixty-two years of age, when the call came and the first drum beat for volunteers, Francis Smith was the first man to enlist in Captain J. J. Hoffman's company for three months in the Eighteenth Ohio Volunteer Infantry. When his short term was out he again enlisted in Company F, Fifty-Third Ohio Volunteer Infantry, and went in the battle of Shiloh (or Pittsburg Landing). He was the first man killed from Jackson county. According to his own request, he was buried on the field where he fell. He was a member of the M. E. Church, was a strong temperance advocate. A more patriotic man never marched in line of battle. His death was caused by three shots - in head, breast and right arm.
