JUDGE JOHN J. C. EVANS,
Judge of the Probate Court of Jackson County, Ohio. Was born on the 4th day of June, 1835, in Wales. He was the oldest of five children whose parents were David J. Evans and Margaret Jones. His parents emigrated to America in the spring of 1841 and settled in Jackson County Ohio. The early education of the subject of this memoir was obtained by his own exertions at the common school. It will be in taste to observe that he has always been a close reader and keen observer, and is essentially a self-made man. His first occupation in life for himself was a house carpenter and joiner, which confined his attention for a period of about ten years. In 1867 he joined the Limestone Furnace Co. as storekeeper, but had previous to this worked at this business. He was elected in the fall of 1869 judge of the Probate Court of Jackson County. He was re-elected in 1872, and is a candidate for re-election in 1875. He was Justice of the Peace of Madison Township for six years. He was married on the 4th day of June, 1857 to Ellen Morgan, a native of Wales, by whom he became the father of two children. She died on the 11th day of June, 1862. He was married on the 18th day of September, 1865 to Mary Jones, a native of Jackson County, by whom he is the father of five children. Politically, the Judge is a republican; voted first for Fremont. Religiously, he is a Presbyterian, of which denomination he has been for years a ruling Elder.
