HON. LEVI DUNGAN,
A prominent attorney of Jackson, in this County, was born on the 28th of December, 1817, in Beaver County, Pennsylvania. He was the oldest of eight children whose parents were Levi Dungan and Margaret Cameron. His father was a native of Beaver County Pennsylvania; followed through life agricultural pursuits; moved to Muskingum County Ohio about the year 1843 where he lived till his death in 1871. His mother was a native of Brooke County, Virginia, and died in 1871. The early education of Mr. Dungan was very liberal and obtained in the main at Franklin College in this State. He immediately in 1840 commenced the reading of law in Steubenville, Ohio, under the direction of Col. James Collier, a prominent attorney of that place. In the fall of 1842 he was admitted to the bar and began practising immediately in Jackson, in this county. He has resided in Jackson ever since, engaged in practice of his profession. He was Prosecuting Attorney of Jackson County from 1843 to 1851, having been re-elected three times. In 1867 he was elected a member of the Representative division of the Ohio Legislature. Mr. Dungan has been unsolicited a candidate for Senator and Judge, and while running with a deserved popularity, was defeated through the minority of his party influence. He was married on the 12th of December, 1842, to Julia A. Westfall, who died in 1862 leaving six children. He was married to his second wife, Martha J. Gilbert, in 1864, by whom he is the father of five children. Politically, Mr. Dungan is a democrat of the Jackson school; voted first for Martin Van Buren. Religiously, his views are not circumscribed by the doctrines of any particular church, though rather in sympathy with the Presbyterian, under whose influence he was reared. The life of Mr. Dungan has been one of activity and industry, although now at an advanced age, his step is yet light, and his physique apparently unimpaired. He has been through life remarkable for the liberality of his views. His mind and his impulses are too honorable and magnanimous for fanaticism and bigotry. A fine engraving of him is found in this atlas.
